Turn the balance of the rest of this collection upside down and you have Europe — more landmark city hotels here than anywhere else we work, with the lodges and resorts as the smaller, more selective half.
The city side reads like a list of the continent's grand hotels: the Plaza Athénée in Paris, the Baur au Lac in Zurich, the Danieli in Venice, the Grande Bretagne in Athens, the Adlon Kempinski in Berlin. Many of these have stood for a century or more, and are booked as destinations rather than stopovers — a city break in Rome, Lisbon or Madrid built around the hotel as much as the itinerary.
The smaller resort and lodge side is where the character shifts — Cappadocia's cave suites at the Museum Hotel, Ravello's cliffside Caruso, Zermatt's Mont Cervin Palace under the Matterhorn, the Greek islands at Canaves Oia and Myconian Avaton. These are booked less as bookends and more as the point of the trip itself.
