Italy is not one destination but a dozen arguing with each other. Rome is imperial, layered and loud; Florence is compact, precise and stuffed with the Renaissance; Venice is a logistical impossibility that has been working for a thousand years. Between them lie Tuscany’s hills, the Amalfi Coast’s vertical villages, and a food culture that changes measurably every fifty kilometres.
Sixty-one UNESCO World Heritage Sites is more than any other country holds, and the sheer density is the challenge as much as the appeal. Two days in Rome is not enough and ten days across three cities can still feel rushed if the order is wrong. That is where our specialists earn their keep — booking the Accademia at the opening slot so David comes before the crowds, putting the Vatican Museums ahead of the mid-morning coach arrivals, and knowing which Tuscan estate actually serves lunch worth driving for.
At Finders & Keepers Safaris we travel Italy privately and on rail rather than by coach, with licensed local guides in every city. The result is a country experienced at a civilised pace — the Sistine Chapel, a Chianti cellar and a gondola through the back canals, without a single queue you did not need to stand in.

Ravello, Amalfi Coast
Caruso occupies an eleventh-century palace on a clifftop high above Ravello, and the building has been kept rather than gutted — original frescoes, vaulted ceilings and archaeological fragments sit alongside the modern comforts rather than being replaced by them.
The grounds fall away below in layered terraces, and the infinity pool at the top appears to hang between the sky and the Tyrrhenian. It is one of the most photographed views on a coast that is nothing but views, and it earns the attention.
Ristorante Belvedere serves traditional Italian and Mediterranean cooking from a terrace over the whole coastline, and the hotel runs a complimentary daily boat along the shore in its own traditional wooden vessel — which is by some distance the best way to see the Amalfi Coast.
