Overview
An Eleventh-Century Palace
Fifty rooms in a palace built by a family who found sanctuary in Ravello on the road to Constantinople.
Caruso occupies an 11th-century palace on the clifftop at Ravello, originally built by the D’Afflitto family from Rome, who found sanctuary here while journeying to Constantinople. Fifty rooms have been restored to their Neapolitan character rather than modernised out of it — hand-crafted terracotta floors, Naples-yellow walls and neo-classical antiques. Original frescoes, vaulted ceilings and archaeological fragments remain in place throughout the building, and the gardens fall away below in layered terraces.
The pool is the photograph. The infinity pool sits at the highest point above Ravello and regularly ranks among the most spectacular in the world. The experience is usually described as being suspended between sea and sky, and for once that is accurate.
