New Zealand packs an implausible range of landscape into two long islands. The North Island is volcanic and geothermal — Rotorua sits on ground that steams, bubbles and occasionally erupts, and the Pōhutu Geyser throws water up to thirty metres. The South Island is alpine and glacial, running down the spine of the Southern Alps to the fiords cut by ice at the bottom of the world.
Fiordland National Park is the centrepiece: 1.2 million hectares inside the larger Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Area, where cliffs rise straight out of black water and waterfalls come off them in every direction. Milford Sound is the accessible one, and Mitre Peak, standing 1,692 metres directly from the sea, is the most photographed mountain in the country.
What holds it together is Māori culture, which is not a heritage exhibit here but a living part of national life — in the language, in place names, in protocol, and in experiences like Te Puia, where the geothermal valley and the carving and weaving school occupy the same ground. At Finders & Keepers Safaris we travel New Zealand privately, and we treat the cultural half with the same seriousness as the landscape.

Featured Accommodation
Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown
The Rees sits on the shore of Lake Wakatipu looking directly across at the Remarkables, which is a mountain range named with unusual accuracy. The lake itself is 80 kilometres of glacier-fed water bent like a finger, and the hotel is positioned so that most rooms have it in the window.
Accommodation runs to lakeside apartments and residences with private balconies, and the scale is generous in a way that suits a base rather than a stopover — this is a property you settle into for several nights between excursions rather than passing through.
The restaurant is award-winning and the wine bar showcases Central Otago, which is one of the great Pinot Noir regions of the world and produces it within twenty minutes of the front door. It is the natural base for Queenstown’s adventure programme and for the long day out to Milford Sound.
