Enquire About This FlightOverview
The colour, the volcano and the flamingos come together at once.
Lake Natron sits just south of the Kenyan border under Ol Doinyo Lengai, the “Mountain of God” to the Maasai and still an active volcano. Salt-loving microorganisms in its shallow, mineral-heavy water turn stretches of it a deep red and pink, and its inhospitable chemistry is exactly what makes it the single most important breeding site for lesser flamingos on the continent.
It is a hard place to reach and a harder place to walk — the same caustic water that colours the lake makes its edges treacherous underfoot. From the air, the colour, the volcano behind it and the flamingos scattered across the flats come together at once.
