Overview
Rwanda’s Only Savanna Park
Eight canvas suites on the Magashi Peninsula, in the park’s only private concession.
Magashi opened in 2019 as the only permanent camp in the remote northern reaches of Akagera, Rwanda’s only savanna national park, and it occupies the park’s sole private concession — 4,200 hectares of exclusive-use land on the Magashi Peninsula, above Lake Rwanyakazinga with the Mutumba Mountains behind. Eight canvas-tented suites stand on elevated boardwalks. Akagera is one of the great conservation recoveries on the continent: lion and Eastern black rhino were both reintroduced, and the park now holds the full Big Five alongside more than 520 bird species.
A conservation success story, recently. Akagera was close to collapse two decades ago. Lion returned in 2015 and Eastern black rhino in 2017, and the park is now managed by African Parks in partnership with the Rwandan government.
