Overview
A Return to the Bund
When The Peninsula Shanghai opened in October 2009, it was the first new building constructed on the historic Bund in over seventy years — and the return of a family hotel company that once ran four of the city's grandest addresses.
The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Limited owned and operated The Kalee, The Astor House, The Palace and The Majestic through Shanghai's 1920s and 30s golden era, and this flagship hotel deliberately recalls that period — exotic woods, imported marble, black lacquer, carved glass and polished chrome throughout, much of it original Art Deco detailing restored from the former British Consulate building next door. All 235 rooms and suites, including 44 suites, rank among Shanghai's largest, with the city's highest staff-to-guest ratio ensuring the kind of attentive service the Peninsula name has long been known for. Many rooms face the river directly, turning the Bund's old-world architecture and Pudong's futuristic towers across the water into a single, ever-changing view.
Shanghai's largest hotel rooms. The Peninsula Shanghai is widely cited as offering the largest standard guestrooms in the city, alongside its distinction as the highest staff-to-guest ratio hotel in Shanghai.
