Overview
One Man’s Vision, Six Years in the Making
Discovered by master-carpenter Steve Williams on a trip to visit the gorillas in Bwindi, Lake Kyaninga became the site of a six-year, entirely handmade labour of love.
Built without cranes or lifting machinery, every one of the lodge's roughly 1,000 hand-carved eucalyptus and Elgon olive timbers was moved into place by a team of over 130 local craftspeople, trained on site over the project's six years. Lake Kyaninga itself formed some 10,000 years ago during the volcanic activity that shaped the region, and today ranks among the cleanest lakes in East Africa — clear enough to swim in, a rarity for Uganda's crater lakes. The lodge's eight log cottages cascade along the crater rim, connected by raised wooden walkways to a striking main lodge with two-sided fireplace and sweeping views over the water.
