Overview

Rooms Carved
Into Granite

Set inside an ancient Bushman's shelter in the Matobo Hills, Amalinda Lodge makes sympathetic use of granite boulders more than two million years old.

Matobo Hills National Park — also spelled Matopos — is Zimbabwe's oldest and smallest national park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its balancing granite kopjes, the highest concentration of black eagles in the world, and one of the greatest densities of San rock art anywhere on Earth. Amalinda Lodge occupies a private 300-acre concession within the park, its multi-level thatched rooms and communal areas built directly among the boulders rather than around them — cave-like lounges, a natural cave wine cellar, and a chess room tucked up among the treetops. The lodge is the founding property of the Amalinda Collection, which today also includes three sister lodges in Hwange National Park.
