Forty hand-built rooms of salt-rock and clay at the foot of the White Mountain, lit only by beeswax candles and the clearest night sky in the Sahara.

Overview
Sand Castle, By the Salt Lake
Adrere Amellal — White Mountain in the local Amazigh language — rises from the desert floor like a fortress, its kershef walls built from sun-dried salt rock, clay and straw.
Founded by environmentalist Dr Mounir Neamatalla, the lodge revived Siwan building techniques nearly lost to time, employing local craftsmen to shape every wall, door and piece of furniture from materials found within the oasis itself. There is no electricity anywhere on the property — after dark, hundreds of beeswax candles and oil lamps light the rooms, corridors and courtyards, with coal braziers warming the cooler desert nights. A spring-fed pool, shaded by palms, and an organic garden supplying nearly every meal complete a lodge built, in its founder's words, to prove that luxury can rhyme with simplicity.
A sister lodge in Siwa Town. Adrere Amellal's owners also run Albabenshal, an 11-room heritage lodge built from restored kershef houses on the edge of Siwa's historic Shali Fortress.

Experiences
Salt Pools, Dunes & the Oracle
Siwa's isolation is the point — activities range from floating in ancient salt springs to venturing into the Great Sand Sea by jeep, sandboard or horseback.
Swimming
Natural Salt Pools
Crystal-clear salt pools scattered across the oasis let guests float much as they would in the Dead Sea.
Desert
The Great Sand Sea
Guided jeep safaris, sandboarding and horseback rides explore the towering dunes bordering Egypt and Libya.
History
Temple of the Oracle of Amun
The site once visited by Alexander the Great sits within reach of the lodge, alongside the painted tombs of Jabal al-Mawta.
Culture
Old Shali Fortress
The crumbling mud-brick fortress at the heart of Siwa Town offers a glimpse into the oasis's fortified past.
Evenings
Desert Dinners Under the Stars
A dinner arranged in the dunes, lit entirely by candlelight, ranks among the lodge's signature experiences.
Wellness
The Spring-Fed Pool
A natural spring feeds the lodge's palm-shaded pool, free of any chemical treatment.
Dining
From the Garden, Nightly
Nearly every ingredient comes from Adrere Amellal's own organic garden or local farmers, with dinner served somewhere different around the property each evening.

Location
Siwa Oasis, Egypt's Far West
Siwa sits roughly 50km from the Libyan border, an isolated oasis inhabited for over 10,000 years, reached only by a long desert drive or private charter.
16km from Siwa Town, at the foot of the White Mountain overlooking Lake Siwa.
Reached by a roughly 8 to 10-hour drive from Cairo, or a private charter flight to a nearby airstrip.
The oasis retains its own language, Siwi, alongside Arabic, and a distinct tradition of embroidery and silver jewellery.
Notable past guests have included Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.
Drive
The most common route is an 8 to 10-hour private drive west from Cairo across the desert.
Charter
A private plane charter to a nearby airstrip cuts the journey to around an hour, at a higher cost.
Arrive
Guests are met and driven the final stretch around Siwa Lake before arriving at the lodge's gates.
A World Apart
Luxury Without Electricity
Adrere Amellal remains one of the world's most complete demonstrations that true luxury can mean simplicity, silence and candlelight rather than more amenities.
